I worked from home today. The real reason is because our office is too small and too loud, my voice included. We are looking at it as way to deal with the high cost of gas as unexpected benefit.
I had to go to the post office today and decided instead of driving the 2 miles I would walk. As I was walking I started to think wouldn’t it be great if we could just not use gas one day a week. One day a week no cars, you either have to walk, ride a bike or take public transportation. Orthodox Jews do this and it’s starting to make a little more sense one day a week to rest and not use energy.
As I walked further the more I liked this idea. Having to walk or ride a bike will be better for your health than sitting in a car. Being out and about you get a chance to meet neighbors. We could even postpone global warming a couple of years.
I am lucky I am in walking distance to almost anything I could want expect a Starbuck’s. I wonder how many people can’t walk to get a gallon of milk, the Sunday newspaper, a stamp, out for dinner or pick up their dry cleaning. Doesn’t that seem wrong?
Why hasn’t anyone suggested that we do this? While we are waiting for hybrid technology, hydrogen, wind farms, solar energy why can’t we start to do something ourselves. Why aren’t more companies offering their employees the option of working from home? Okay some of you might have jobs where you have to in the office or travel to a customer but what about the weekends. Could you give up driving for a day?
Okay if you can’t give up a day of driving what would you be willing to give up?
